performance project
Paint leaves a mark. It’s usually easily visible and that’s what I like about it. It shows where something has been and can sometimes tell a story. I covered my golf club with plastic wrap, got foam gold balls, and some very bright paint to cover said foam golf balls and just started hitting. I really enjoyed seeing where the balls hit and leaving a mark. More interestingly, it would also leave the texture of the ball. I hung a piece of cloth by two points so the cloth could swing freely as the balls impacted. One thing that inspired me was how different gold clubs would hit at different angles. I used the same club throughout my performance piece and there were moments where I made a straight horizontal line. And with golf there’s a lot of consistency. Swings are usually the same, except for much power you put behind it. You’re constantly bent forward, looking down, eyes on the ball, and going all the way with a swing. There’s also patience but that’s hard to see in paint sometimes. What you can see is rage and anger. After a long day of golf, and maybe inconsistent swings, maybe some anger builds up. Throwing the club is usually the go-to for some golfers which is why I used of the rest of the paint that remained to smother my club with paint and toss it at the cloth. That was the end of course, as it usually when a person decides to through their tool or instrument as far as humanly possible.
