cardboard chair
I built a chair. Not something simple for most people. Especially not simple for me. To make it even less simple, I used cardboard, wood glue, and duct tape to build it. A flimsy material that can’t be compared to the superiority of wood. It was a challenge. I couldn’t nail cardboard together and hope it would hold or wouldn’t tear. It was interesting because the design process was way more different than one for a wooden chair. There were more pieces that had to be made for my design and the assembly was rather delicate. Instead of making a couple legs, a base, and calling it a day, I had to make multiple pieces for the structure to be strong to hold a large amount of weight. I enjoyed the challenge a little bit of using cardboard instead of wood. Making something that is used for holding the weight of an average adult human, or more, was a challenge too. First I measured a couple of chairs in my house and choose the measurements that, I thought, were the best for sitting. Then I looked over a couple of the images showed in class for inspiration and made a scale drawing. The process did not go exactly how I wanted it to but it turned out just as good. The lack of cardboard had me compromise but it still turned out good. To me, my chair is something that is standing and can hold a large amount of weight, but has the appearance like it can’t. It makes me think about not judging someone by their appearance or underestimating someone before you engage with them.
